SOUND FAMILIAR?
When your mind is always a step ahead of you
You might look fine from the outside. The work gets done, you remember everyone's birthday, you're the one people count on. Inside, though, there's a steady hum of pressure: maybe it's the conversation you keep replaying long after it ended, rehearsing tomorrow's meeting at 1 a.m., rereading an email before you hit send, bracing for the thing that might go wrong.
Anxiety and stress doesn't always look like panic. Often they look like being busy, careful and prepared. If your mind rarely feels quiet, therapy can help you understand what's driving the worry and find steadier ways to manage and respond to it.

HOW IT CAN SHOW UP
What anxiety can look like day-to-day
Everyone's anxiety is a little different. Some of these may feel familiar.
In your thoughts
Jumping to worst-case outcomes, replaying conversations, trouble deciding because the wrong choice feels too risky.
In your body
Tension, a tight chest, an unsettled stomach, feeling wired but tired, trouble falling asleep.
In your behaviour
Over-preparing, checking, putting things off, avoiding situations or opportunities that might set off the anxious feeling.
In sudden waves
For some people, panic attacks: a racing heart, shortness of breath, or a sense that something is terribly wrong.
WHEN ANXIETY LOOKS LIKE SUCCESS
Performing well and
feeling well are not the same thing.
High-functioning anxiety
Some of the most anxious people are also the most capable. Anxiety can quietly power qualities that get rewarded: attention to detail, reliability, always being responsive. Because the results are good, it can seem as though the anxiety is necessary for success.
But performing well and feeling well are not the same thing. You can keep the qualities you value without anxiety being the thing that powers them.
We write more about this in High-Functioning Anxiety: When Anxiety Doesn't Look Like Anxiety.
UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN
What keeps the cycle going
Anxiety is often fuelled less by events than by how we interpret them. The same delayed reply can feel neutral one day and alarming the next, depending on the story your mind tells about it. One common pattern is catastrophizing: a single mistake becomes "I'll lose my job," a quiet friend becomes "they're upset with me."
The things we do to feel better in the moment, like avoiding, reassurance-seeking or over- preparing, bring brief relief. Over time they can teach your nervous system that the threat was real and the anxiety was needed, so the cycle continues.
"Life is rarely as extreme as our catastrophic thoughts make it seem!"
